Traditionally a cattle grazing area, Tenterfield district boasts a variety of prize winning stock. The two main breeds of beef in Tenterfield are the Angus & Hereford. Merino sheep are bred for their fine wool and New England fat lambs are a much sought after commodity. Premier Meats in High Street are proud to be a 09/10 gold medalist for their sausages – while a secret recipe has been used, there’s nothing stopping you buying a supply of them to take home.
The Tenterfield Fishing & Restocking Club takes great care in releasing thousands of fingerlings into its rivers and waterways to ensure good fishing all year. The trick is to find out from a local where the best fishing spots are.
You are sure to be told about one of Queensland’s better known freshwater destination, Glen Lyon Dam which is a moderate sized lake of 1800 ha holding 254 000 ML of water at an average depth of 4.3m. It is also called Pike Creek Dam or Pike Creek Reservoir. Golden Perch dominate catches here, but it is the chance of tangling with a big Murray Cod that has put Glenlyon on the map. Silver Perch are also stocked and there is an endemic population of Tandans (Eel-tailed catfish) and Spangled Perch. A Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required to fish here.
Tenterfield Creek which runs through the town holds yellowbelly and cod. The Clarence River holds bass, catfish and mullet. (Eastern cod lives here and as a protected species, must be returned). The western fall rivers which run west off the tablelands – Mole and Dumaresq Rivers – hold yellowbelly, cod and catfish and there is crown land fishing on Deadman’s Reserve 14km west on Tenterfield Creek (within NSW). Closed season on Murray Cod is from 1 Sep – 30 Nov. |
